Onouli Farm of Kona was the first time winner of Hawaii in a cupping competition, which makes it a very fine day for Hawaii indeed. The entire competition took place on the Maui Tropical Plantation, and Kona took the first place out of 69 contestants. The coffees were all judged on their dry and wet aromas, body, balance, sweetness, acidity, and aftertaste. First, the judges examined the dry aromas of fresh grounds in small bowls, and then hot water was added for the wet aroma to be judged. It is said that the best conditions for a true cupping are in natural light, since dim light has been known to deaden the sense of smell. Interesting! It is also best if the room has a humidity of 50 to 70%, since if the room happens to be too dry, the sense of smell will again be dulled. Cupping is also recommended to occur in late morning or late afternoon, where you are at the perfect time between meals to not be too hungry or too full. This way your taste buds and sense of smell are incredibly heightened. Either way, this is a fantastic victory for Kona, and a great inspiration for a cup of Joe!
