Coffee for Babies? The Rise of the Babyccino

What do you say, parents? Do you think it's a good idea to give your tiny tot a cup of Joe? Probably not. That's why babyccinos have been created as the latest trend in cafés.

A babyccino is a specialty drink made for kids either as a small decaf cappuccino or a beverage made from steamed milk with foam. This simple drink costs just a few dollars and is increasing in popularity for parents who want to bring their kids with them to cafés to enjoy the coffee experience - without the caffeine, of course.

Babyccinos have actually been around for years, starting in Australia roughly one decade ago. Now this trend has made its way over to New York City, where it is getting mixed reviews from parents. Many parents are on board and are happy to give their kids a faux coffee beverage that they can enjoy at a coffee shop. Other parents refuse to give their kids this mock coffee treat, perhaps because they don't want their kids to get accustomed to drinking coffee-like beverages at such a young age - whether or not they contain caffeine.

Parents, if you do order your kids a decaf babyccino, remember that even decaffeinated coffee contains a small amount of caffeine at roughly 1 to 3%.
